Make-up artist Clare Eluka aka Spikes examines the pros and cons of styles for afro hair and fills us in and all the best products to make whatever style we choose glisten and glow.

Personally I have nappy hair which my mum used to wrap in silk and was referred to as ‘Medusa’ or ‘Crystal Maze’ hair. When I was 10 an older girl in my area relaxed her hair and I loved its apparent manageability. I went through secondary school rocking different weaves, extensions and varied lengths of relaxed hair. At 15 I grew it all out but four years later I fell victim to the relaxer again. In Christmas 2007 I vowed to cut my hair low and be natural for life! It might be fair to say that these major hair changes were boy inspired in one way or another!

So I’m sticking with my nappy head and I’m happy but because of my acting interests I’m always in constant opposition with myself about what is commercially viable and what looks too ethnic. It has been widely discussed that when you are in the western world you do as westerners do: meaning you adopt the image of beauty that reflects the majority of the land you live in. I guess ultimately hairstyles and hair types are down to the individual to define and re-define. What looks hot now may not in 5 years time so leave yourself open to adaptation.

The best thing we can do is care for the hair do’s we do sport:

RELAXED HAIR

1. Deep condition your hair at least once a week. Opt for a conditioner that contains Keratin. It helps, immensely, if you can sit under the dryer for fifteen minutes with the conditioner on your hair. Good deep conditioners include Aveda Sap Moss Detangler and Body Shop Brazil Nut Leave In Condiitoner.
2. Whenever you comb your hair, comb from the ends up. If you comb from the roots to the ends, the tension could cause the hair to snap or break.
3. Treat your hair like a fine, expensive silk garment. It is best to avoid rigorous shampooing or styling. It may take longer to care and style your hair but the results are worth it.
4. Wrap your hair in silk.

What is in a relaxer?

The most common relaxers targeted for black hair come in two distinct formulations:

Sodium hydroxide relaxer:

The strongest formulation contains sodium hydroxide, a powerful chemical known as an alkaline caustic. The percentage of sodium hydroxide will vary depending on the strength of the relaxing solution (they come in mild to strong, depending on the texture of the hair to be treated). As with all alkalies, the higher the pH levels, the stronger the chemical. Hair relaxers generally have pHs ranging from 10-14. The higher the pH, the faster you hair will straighten.

Guanidine hydroxide relaxer:

These relaxers are commonly known as a ‘no lye’ relaxer- a term which refers to an absence of sodium hydroxide in the formulation. While guanidine essentially works in the same way, it takes two steps to create the proper formulation. The no-lye perm works by combining calcium hydroxide (an alkali created for lime and water) with an ‘activator’ solution of guanidine carbonate- another alkali. The result is a chemical cocktail thought to be slightly less damaging than a traditional sodium hydroxide with lower pH levels.

So to lye or not to lye?

Some milder formulas don’t work as quickly or as effectively. Others prefer no-lye formulas because they can’t take the burning of the lye. Relaxers are never supposed to touch the scalp but always do, and the longer it’s on, the more the chance for irritation; those with lye tend to burn more. When in doubt check with your stylist.

Recommended no lye relaxers: Soft & Beautiful, TCB, African Pride, Organics and Isoplus

NATURAL HAIR

My hair has be natural since 2007. I had to change all my hair care to suit my hair. I love tea tree products and raw coconut oil.

1. Wash with non sodium Lareth Sulfate shampoos such as Neal’s Yard, Lush Bars or The Body Shop’s Bilberry Range.
2. Do a hot oil treatment with either carrot, coconut, almond, lavender or tea tree oil to nourish the scalp.
3. Overnight leave in conditioners work a treat and will strengthen the hair shaft over time.

If you have natural hair, enjoy it! Dye it, twist it, plait it and press it with GHD straightening irons but always, always grease it and wrap it. Treat it like you would a weave. Over combing can cause damage and make sure when you’re in extreme weathers like direct sunlight or rain you cover your tresses with a hat.

WEAVES (AND BRAIDS)

Weave has got me through some of the shadiest points of my youth. When my hair wouldn’t grow or I needed a hairstyle to match an outfit I could glue in a few tracks or get a sewn in full head. Now I take to rocking a wig for an immediate change. Hollywood depends on weave to glamourise and beautify stars.

Over the years weave has caused me major headaches and have felt now after sporting my ‘fro for the past year that I can’t actually wear weaves as I can’t stand the pressure it produces on my temples.

1. Make sure you grease the scalp twice weekly with a little light emollient such as Dax or Sta Soft Fro products.
2. If you are brave enough to wash your weave or braided style make sure you sit under the dryer to dry the hair and re-style your hair fully with GHDs etc.
3. Do not leave in either hairstyle in your hair for more than 8 weeks maximum. Your hair should have a 2 week break every 6-8 weeks.

There are pros and cons to every decision you make where beauty is concerned. Make sure that if you add artificial products to your hair that you do the necessary treatments and aftercare remedies and take as much care with your natural hair with natural ingredients.

What’s Next? Get Pretty Naturally with Milvali Cosmetics

March 26th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in Uncategorized

Tomorrow, Victoria and I are heading out with our cameras not far from where I live, to one of the Milvali Salons in, …YOU GOT IT! Mill Valley. It’s located right in the heart of our cute downtown, next to a Cici’s Gelateria and Stephano’s Pizza, and across the street from famous Pearl’s Burgers. Upon entering, its not hard to see that the salon is very chic, clean and very friendly, and very PASSIONATE. The walls are a fiery red that will heat you up real fast.

The city sure did make a name for itself… via cosmetics.

I have had my hair cut there twice or three times, and I am impressed with the quality of service. I came in one time with a photo of some girl with hair that i liked, and an hour or so later, It was on my head. I was very pleased with how it turned out, for the very affordable and standard price of a salon haircut: $65. VERY well worth it.

Milvali Salon and Cosmetics is known for its excellent customer service and innovative salon services. We are a full service salon with an exclusive cosmetics line focusing on botanical skincare and all natural mineral make-up. Cruelty free products, expertise waxing, professional make up artists and cutting edge hairstylists are what makes Milvali unique. We are proud to present our newest product:  Kerastase! You can now purchase our products at Pacific Tan as well.  But don’t take our word for it: See what Yelp and CitySearch have to say about us!

- Milvali.com

I haven’t looked much into their make up line, so I’m excited to interview the owners tomorrow, and you will hear from us shortly, and see some of us as well.  Here is what we’re hearing of it, though! See you sooon.

So my friend was turning the big 3-0 and instead of doing the usual bar or dinner thing we opted to go to Milvali for one of the pretty parties that we’ve heard so much about. Wow let me tell you all the girls were extremely talented and soooo much fun! We walked in and were immediately excited by the atmosphere. The salon is really cute and they had prepared a spread of yummy cheeses, crackers and fruit  not to mention the the wine, the ladies kept our glasses full and had other options for our friend who does not drink. It was a night to remember and a great kick off for my friend.Believe me she was glowing when we left and we all  looked beautiful! The night got even better when we saw the  responses we were getting from all the cuties we saw when we left! I would recommend a Milvali to anyone who wants to look and feel amazing! - A YELP! back from kyoto

March 23rd, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in Uncategorized

took the early morning 5.30am train to kyoto yesterday, freaking tired if you were to ask me.

met up with the university’s staff, went down to the immigration to get my visa status change. shortly after, went to get apply for my alien registration card, had lunch at a nearby chinese place and finally went to finalize and sign my contract for my apartment. was supposed to move in on the 1st of april, but due to some reason it has been push back to the 4th.

mummy will be coming on the 30th but i wouldn’t have time or chance to meet up with her, so i guess i will only be seeing her when she and the rest of the family comes on the 13th of april.

was on the phone with xiaochen as well, she will also be coming in april, not sure when yet. she will be coming as soon as her visa get approved.

and i think i’ve decided to get hair extensions !

Girls’ Night

March 23rd, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in Uncategorized

My last final was on Thursday night, and I asked Shaniqua and Anh to come over for a girls’ night.

Shaniqua arrived with her boyfriend and her boyfriend brought some betta fishes Andy said he would take care of for Spring Break. He loves the fish so much that he would not let me put the fish on the table; he wanted to put it on the table himself. WEIRDO lol. After he stared at his fish for awhile, Shaniqua and the lover went outside to do naughty things hehe. Shaniqua brought Slumdog Millionaire over, along with some sandwiches, burritos, and salads from Bruin Cafe. Thanks Shaniqua and the dude for the food ^_^

Afterward, Anh came over with her amazing hair extensions and some corner falsies. Before we watched the movie, Anh clipped the hair into my head. The hair was so beautiful! I want some so badly, but I cannot dish out $100 for them (

The results! Gorgeous hair!

(Look at all of my dirty laundry hehe)

Yes, Andy is one of the girls… we call her Mandy.

Slumdog Millionaire was a good movie, however, I do not think it lived up to its hype. I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Back by popular demand. The red carpet party planners for the MTV Awards have asked that Donna Bella Milan Hair Extensions come back for the big event this year.

Our clip-in hair extensions were a huge hit last year with a lot of A-list stars. They couldn’t believe how easy it was for them to apply the extensions by themselves. Because none of the stars want to mess up their own, we took some models to show how it’s done.

It literally takes less than 5 minutes and looks amazing. We have a big selection of blended colors that look totally natural. The length ratios also eliminate the need for any cutting and blending. Put it in and either run a flat iron through it or use your curling iron to add some body.

This year we’ll also be taking our recently released “hi-lo lights”. We’re excited to get some awesome pictures and share them with you.

Style Icon: Alaina Beaton

Internet Superstar, Alaina Beaton is known for her wild hair colors, behavior and mouth. As the lead singer of the band, Porcelain and the Tramps, not only does she have a killer voice but she has a killer style as well. Although their album is still not released, she captures millions of fans on sites such as MySpace, YouTube, and Last FM. Ever since I’ve seen and heard of her on MySpace, I was hooked. I have all of PATT’s songs downloaded to my MP3. She may be against the mainstream world, but she is one that you may be seeing a lot of in the future.

Katie Holmes is a total babe in this pic. I’m not ok with the snarky comments from E! about her outfit. Um, hello, it’s called awesome. And I’m pretty sure it’s a dress, not a “magenta patchwork bustier and red skirt.” Bitches.

Hair extensions, what are the ethics?

March 17th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in Uncategorized

To conceal thinning or hair loss, a lot of people turn to hair extensions, and even more popularly, to make their hair thick, and long.  Hair extensions and integrations are either artificial or natural.

Fake hair on a fake head

Fake hair on a fake head

Natural extensions as you may already know are shaved off other people’s heads. Whether or not those people are rightfully paid for their hair is highly disputed. For instance some  of that hair can be traced back to Indian hair sacrificing temples where women shave their heads as an act of religious sacrifice. What governs other sources may also not be ethical.

Some argue that one man’s junk is another mans treasure and therefore are not worried if respective and rightful compensation is paid. For others, ethics surrounding such issues are a little complicated and make it harder for one to want natural extensions.
