Should I fake it or leave it…

September 29th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in Uncategorized

hairxBack from my trip to sunny Singapore. Can’t say that I didn’t enjoy myself, what with the really cheap and affordable manicures and pedicures, massages and what I’ve missed out on – eyelash and hair extensions! No, I didn’t go for all of the above, much as I would have loved to. I did have the complete manicure and pedicure package, which cost me all of but AUD$29.00 – yes you read it right! It seemed only a few years ago – say 7 years? That I trodded around the shops at Far East Plaza only to find a mere handful of nail bars and salons. This time round, I was amazed at the number of nail bars available! Each with their own specialty! What caught me off guard were the number of salons that specialised in – Eyelash and Hair Extensions! Was that the latest craze? Had I been missing out on something? I strolled along the shops, wondering if I should get my lashes done – just for the fun of it. I even observed the girls while walking around Singapore, looking at the results of those who donned on these fake eyelashes. Yes, you could tell they were fake unfortunately. The emphasis made on their eyes were actually – scarry! Thick and long lashes with very dark eye make up and not to mention the long – hair extensions…kinda reminded me of ELVIRA!

The salons specialising in hair extensions also blew me away. The samples were hung along the front of the shops, reminding me of…dried cuttlefish! Seriously! Some even coming in a myriad of colours!

Still I contemplated on having my lashes done. After nearing the end of my stay – 2 weeks, I decided against them. Why? Firstly, my dear friend, who is an experienced beautician, has not got hers done – so there must be something that isn’t right for her NOT to do it! Secondly, the fact that my own lashes might drop off after a month, along with the extensions, scared me a little. I also read the dangers of having eye infections if not done by an experienced and responsible person. So, decided to stick to my not very long but very natural lashes instead. The upkeep and other possible dangers really stopped me from going ahead with them. Plus I’m really not a high maintenance chick who needs to get stuff done to her face every month – no time and really no money! I’ll just stick to mascara thanks! And as to my hair – my husband’s reaction to me contemplating on having extensions – “Why don’t you just grow it out? Wouldn’t that be cheaper and easier?” Totally agree.

How come I don’t have good hair?

September 22nd, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in Uncategorized

I’m a huge advocate on originality and people not giving into social and economic restrictions.. so I was pleasantly surprised when I ran across an article on a film by Chris Rock in GQ magazine. Below is an excerpt from Festival.Sundance.org:

When Chris Rock’s daughter, Lola, came up to him crying and asked, “Daddy, how come I don’t have good hair?” the bewildered comic committed himself to search the ends of the earth and the depths of black culture to find out who had put that question into his little girl’s head! Director Jeff Stilson’s camera followed the funnyman, and the result is Good Hair, a wonderfully insightful and entertaining, yet remarkably serious, documentary about African American hair culture. An exposé of comic proportions that only Chris Rock could pull off, Good Hair visits hair salons and styling battles, scientific laboratories, and Indian temples to explore the way black hairstyles impact the activities, pocketbooks, sexual relationships, and self-esteem of black people. Celebrities such as Ice-T, Kerry Washington, Nia Long, Paul Mooney, Raven Symoné, Maya Angelou, and Reverend Al Sharpton all candidly offer their stories and observations to Rock while he struggles with the task of figuring out how to respond to his daughter’s question. What he discovers is that black hair is a big business that doesn’t always benefit the black community and little Lola’s question might well be bigger than his ability to convince her that the stuff on top of her head is nowhere near as important as what is inside.

The funny thing about this is, I was just watching a clip from the VIEW the other day, and Whoopi Goldberg was posing the question, that with all the advancement in Black hair, including weave etc. Why are Black women still trying to pull off white women hair? why not get your hair done to look your own ethnicity? is what I got from the conversation. I think it does pose a good question….

my opinion is not completely un tarnished, because given a good deal of money and a certified plastic surgeon, I’d pay to look more ethnic….

I decided to do my hair my self to save money, DISASTER!! I was a walk in client on a busy Sat. I decided to chance my luck. Luckily for me, Nikki fit me in, she went above and beyond to accommodate me. She turned my nasty bright pinkish red hair back to my natural sun kissed coppery hair. A hair angel she is!! I will be back to see Nikki again for sure!

I went to try out the new salon and to be honest was a bit nervous trying a new salon & colorist, but I have to say when I got there I felt right at home and relaxed. They have an awesome new colorist from Florida and she does wonders. Her name is Justine and I highly recommend seeing her, She definetly knows what she is doing and is a pleasure to converse with. My hair has never had a better color, my husband even noticed! The salon itself is very comfortable and the staff seemed to be having fun and enjoying what they were doing. The ease of the employees makes you feel like you been there many times before and helps you settle in if it’s your first time there. I will be going back to see Justine again. The salon looks to have my business for a long time to come.

I’ve been coming to Bethany for 3 years and followed her to this great little salon in Parker! You should check out the wine walks they do with the Mainstreet Biz Group too. Lots of fun they sometimes do fashion shows or makeovers and there are munchies and wine to sample!

Bethany is an amazing stylist! She always gets the cut and color just right and even teaches me how to do what she does to my hair when I get home. I really like the face that they’ve now gone all organic at the salon as well. No nasty chemical smells at all.. Plus the shop is really cute and fits in so well with the Mainstreet Parker area.

Great salon in a great area! If you are like me and you live in the ‘burbs and don’t have time to travel to the big city, then Rebbeca J is the place for you! Rebecca has been doing hair for years and it shows. She is confident and makes you feel great when you leave her salon!

May I also say that I love, love, love the look of her salon! Who doesn’t love black leather, exposed brick and damask print?!

I hope she stays at this location forver – I don’t want to have to follow her anywhere else!

If Rebecca isn’t available then Bethany is your girl!

My Favorite Styling Tools

September 17th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in Uncategorized

I’m also asked which styling tools are my favorites so I thought I would post info on the two I use most. My absolute favorite styling tools are the Super Solano Lite hair dryer and the Hot Tools Professional Ceramic + Titanium Spring Curling Iron.

The Super Solano Lite hair dryer is amazing, it is not heavy to hold once on and it dries hair without damage. It’s a professional dryer and therefore expensive but so worth it when I think about how often I blow-dry and how much I could be damaging my hair.

I have the Hot Tools Professional Ceramic + Titanium Spring Curling Iron with a 1 1/2″ barrel. My hair is long so this size is best but you can go with the 1 1/4″ barrel if you hair is shorter. My hair does not hold curl well so this iron is great for maintaining a great wavy look all day. I don’t even have to use hairspray!

My Favorite Hair Products

September 17th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in Uncategorized

I’m often asked by my clients which hair products I like best so I thought I would post info on my favorites. They work especially well on extensions but I recommend them to everyone!

Pureology’s Hydrate line does not weigh your hair down like other hydrating products out there.  My hair holds curl with from a curling iron best with this shampoo & conditioner.

I also recommend Moroccan Oil every other wash or so.  Put a quarter sized amount in you palm and run it through the ends of towel-dried hair after showering and before you blowdry.  It actually decreases dry -time and leaves your hair extremely soft and shiny…..all without weighing it down or feeling greasy.  It can be a bit pricey at $39/bottle but it is so worth it and it lasts for months!

Tits, asses, elbows, necks.

Women are women.

I’ve got nothing more to say
to any of them, while they have never had
anything to say
at all.

Dance around the pole, Lucite high-heels kicking through a litter of dollars.

Fat Asian loser, Fat Indian loser, Fat White crewcut loser. Bashful smiles of nerd losers, blushing redder than the hideous lights.

The vagina always looks like something half-finished and whose to blame for that? The gaping asshole nearby.

I wonder what they clean it with.

(The pole, not the hole).

Stripper Windex?

I try to smell women over the music. Nothing.

Their skin is so smooth,
like wetsuits without zippers.

Red lights, blue lights, yellow lights, green lights, the music one big thumping seizure. Why has no one ever killed the DJ?

Too many tattoos, too many hair extensions, too many hard drugs, too many one-year-olds at home.

Souls like pancakes soaked in ketchup.

Take the fucking dollar
and get lost.
