NewHair by Paula Young

I just found my way to a uniquely, interesting and new product over at Paula Young. I describe it as a kind of notch wig - instead of there being monofilament or lace at the front part, there is a gap instead where your own hair part shows through. Paula Young calls it NewHair and they have about five different styles like this. I chose a Chanel, which happens to be a fairly popular mid-length choice as a full wig. I didn’t like though that the full wig Chanel seemingly sports permatease and no monofilament part, so the NewHair Chanel was thus a better choice to try!

The NewHair Chanel is a bit tricky to put on properly at first, but becomes easier with practice. It incorporates the 3/4 wig fall’s front and back nape attachment combs, the front comb being located just a bit in front of the crown. And then there are clips to attach on each side of the “notch” gap. Getting 2 combs and 2 clips to sit just so on the head for a left part (as the NewHair Chanel has) does wind up being a bit of a balancing act! Once everything is in place, you then take your own hair, and again much like a 3/4 fall, comb it over the edges of the notch to blend and camoflauge.

Overall, it works out pretty well! Falls are often so obvious because there exists a single straight edge which delineates the wig hair from your own. I find that this NewHair line gets around that while still providing the ability to reveal your own hair part. A very handy feature! If your own hairline is robust enough, I would recommend giving the NewHair line a try.

My first 3/4 piece sees some action

August 25th, 2006 | Comments Off | Posted in 3/4 wig, ShanaB, headband, toppers, wig stores

I bought a cheapie 3/4 hairpiece…

What propelled me was that every now and then I like really long and lush hair for an outing. So I visited my local costume store which specializes not so much in realistic hair as in over-the-top party hair, ranging anywheres from drag-queen to hootchie mama supreme. Naturally I found some pretty long extensions there! I chose a simple 3/4 with some blended highlights that reaches to my shoulder blades. Matching my hair was an extreme challenge. I haven’t bothered to color my bio-hair lately so it is a mess of colors at the moment, but the 3/4 I chose was actually a decent blend. By the way, I have no idea who manufactures this 3/4 wig - there was a tag that said Trinity on it but my online searches have produced nothing… Nonetheless it served its purpose for the night. It was kind of funny actually. A few people expressed not having seen me for awhile, which made me wonder if they thought my hair had grown out in record time. Others complimented and what not.

Only one really scrutinized and naturally (or not so much so) I claimed extensions, teeheehee.

So what were the downsides? Well a 3/4 attaches with 2 huge gnarly combs front and back, and my, was I ever conscious of those suckers yanking at my hair all night. And I did sacrifice some follicles disentangling the combs from my beleaguered hair at the end of the night. So wearing these things on a regular basis are not quite practical. Also, there was that annoying bump line on top delineating the 3/4 hair from my own, and no way do I possess lush enough bio-hair to completely cover and camoflauge that area - heck no. I wimped out and wore a headband instead which made me look a tad more retro rather than bombshell. Still the illusion was a good one - a wide headband had the added advantage of visually ameliorating the color difference between my front hair and the 3/4’s hair color. I do believe getting the 3/4 made me understand a bit better how a topper might so a similar effective job, with less strain. For those of you who are considering a wig, you might pursue a 3/4 wig in the short-term just because they are rather affordable and seem to be more available as quickie hair accessories used by a number of women I know. You’ll observe many actresses donning these that’s for sure!
