The New Finger Trend

June 4th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in Beauty, Beauty Business, Beauty News, Style

We have a new beauty treatment on our hands. Literally. It’s called Minx Nails. Rather than using liquid polish to color your nails, Minx nails uses solid nail coating type stickers. They are heated and then applied to your nail, and last roughly 4 weeks. And the main appeal for this over liquid polish… no chipping! The process is quite simple really:

1. Pick your color

2. Place Minx under heat lamp to make flexible.

3. Re size to fit your nail shape.

4. Use heat lamp to shrink-wrap the Minx covering

5. File to remove excess film.

6. Enjoy!

Jon and Kate plus Kates hair

May 20th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in Beauty News, Hair Extension News, Hair Gossip, Hair News

It seems everyone’s gone wild over Kate Gosslin’s hair! People are comparing its popularity to that of the Jennifer Aniston “Rachel” cut. But i kinda think the hair-do is getting so much attention because it is such a drastic change from where her hair was at the beginning of Jon & Kate plus 8. She started out as somewhat a frumpy mess, and has turned into a bit of a fashionista!

Kate calls her hair “her attitude” and recently said “Everybody wants it” and that “it’s work. I have very, very thick hair, so it’s not going to work for everybody. I’ve seen people…with thin hair and it just won’t work. My hair stylist gets calls from all across the country.”

Although I greatly admire any women with the courage for such a short do, I am not personally a fan of this particular ‘front mullet’ bob. While I love the spikes in the back, I am thrown off by the huge straight chunk that hides the entire side of her face. Maybe it is meant to work as a shield to hide from paparazzi? Well everyone else can go ga-ga over this one, but I have a good feeling it will be one of those “What was i thinking?” hair-styles for her and all of her hair followers.

Dos and Dont’s of Hair Extensions

May 19th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in Beauty News, Hair Extension News, Hair News

Just like any beauty treatment, hair extensions come with a list of dos and donts to keep them looking their best.

1. Use a stylist-approved hairbrush, making sure to brush your hair from the scalp to the ends daily.

2. Separate your hair by hand.

3. Before going to bed, tie back hair loosely.

4. Before washing, brush and sort the hair properly.

5. Don’t wash or brush hair upside down for the first month. The attachments are still new and the hair can be torn out.

6. Shampoo hair gently, being careful not to rub the hair against each other.

7. Don’t rub hair to towel dry, squeeze excess water out.

8. Sort hair with your fingers, and gently remove any tangles, especially at scalp.

9. Always dry the bonding points immediately and thoroughly.

10. Don’t apply flat iron or curling iron at bond points! Always start just below bond point.

11. Avoid getting into mall fights when you have extensions. Although perhaps I should go into a bit more detail with this one… A 15-year-old, Fort Walton Beach, girl was charged with battery and disorderly conduct after starting a fight with another girl. The victim and her mother were standing outside the mall when the suspect confronted them and started talking about a incident that happened earlier that day. The suspect then precedes to take off her shoes and says “Yeah, I want to fight,” and struck the victim, according to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office arrest report. She then grabbed the victim’s hair and pulled out her hair extensions. Which were later found on the ground. The victim then drew a knife and stabbed the defendant, the report said. They did not say whether she was charged. Yikes, I guess the suspect picked the wrong hair to pull out.

A lesson to learn

May 11th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in Beauty News, Hair Extensions, Hair Gossip, Salon News

I would assume that anyone who has hair extensions or who spends top dollar at fancy salons would know that at home hair care is of up most importance in keeping their salon job in good condition. So when I heard this story about a woman named Sarah Ward, a 36-year-old mother of two, i was certainly surprised.

Sarah sued Rumi Simone Inc., claiming that they are responsible for the bad hair day she has been having for the last year and a half because of her hair falling out. Her hair has been snapping off at the scalp, and she claims the services she got at the salon are to blame.

And the attorney for the Lake Oswego salon emphasized that Wards failure to follow salon advice caused it to fall out. Ward sought $50,000 for “humiliation, depression and the cost of hair extensions.” But she didn’t receive a penny of it. They jury concluded that the salon was not at fault for Wards poor at home hair care.

The Lesson here is simple. If you are going to have hair extensions or pay professionals to do your hair, make sure you listen to their advice and take care of it after you leave the salon. Afterall, the hair stylists certainly cant follow you home and make sure you are doing your part to keep your hair attached to your head.

Some big hair art

April 29th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in Beauty, Beauty News, Hair & Beauty Shows, Hair News, award show fashion

The International Fantasy Hair Competition, held in Manchester, NH, is about turning hair into art. But as it turns out, this isn’t just a beauty show but a good cause too. All proceeds for the night went to the New Hampshire Food Bank.

Stylists compete to make what look like the most absurd hair hats they can dream up. And the prizes range from $1000 to $7500. But the real work is done perhaps by the models, whom say the main ingredient for them is “Pain. Lots and lots of pain,”. And i guess its understandable. Melody Longobardi, 26, was forced by the 3-foot cherry tree on her head to stand at a 45-degree angle.

Grand prize winner was stylist Kevin Carter for his “Proud Peacock,” which involved actual feathers to look like the bird itself. And the model of his winning creation was Amaris Brown.

December 29th, 2008 | Comments Off | Posted in Beauty News, Hair Extension News

Remember that post a while back, the one where that guy from New Zealand was going to wear 6 meters of hair extensions for 6 weeks? Well, he’s managed to do it, and the record is officially his. We’re still waiting on more details and we’ll post them here as they come.

Paris Hilton's Extensions Needing Adjustment

Paris Hilton's Extensions Needing Adjustment

It could have happened to anyone, it just happens to have happened to the face of Hair Extensions, hotel heiress, Paris Hilton. The extensions queen was recently spotted on the runway with all her clasps hanging out - not the end of the world by any stretch - but could have easily been avoided. One thing’s for sure: She was in desperate need of a visit to the salon!

Confident as ever, Paris was walking on to the red carpet in Hollywood in mid August, looking classy and glamorous posing for the paparazzi.

Unfortunately, her best efforts to impress were undone when she turned around to reveal a hair extension-hairstyle malfunction.

Lesson for the rest of us? It’s important that every 6-8 weeks you head back in to your favorite extension stylist for a quick bead adjustment, to ensure your locks look their best. Those new to hair extensions might not like the idea of having to go in for constant adjustments, but that’s just part of the commitment

Surviving (and profiting from) a Slow Economy

May 15th, 2008 | Comments Off | Posted in Beauty Business, Beauty News, Hair Extensions, Hair News, salon

It’s on the front page of every newspaper in the US - and around the world: the troubled US economy. As consumers, and for many of us as business owners, we’re feeling the pinch everywhere - from the grocery store, price gouging hikes at the gas pump, electricity bills, to raising rents. Like every slump, there’s a mountain high somewhere in the future, but in the mean time, it’s survival mode for many.

Beauty Store Business magazine has a series on the economy and the beauty industry this month. Here’s a clip from their most recent article:

The three best ways to survive any slump, real or anticipated, are to:

  • Know your business well so you can fine-tune it to increase profits (see “Knowing Your Numbers,” below).
  • Take advantage of federal income tax laws to minimize the bite of taxes and help pick up a bigger portion of your cost of doing business (to be discussed in Part 2).
  • Employ cost-cutting strategies to help you weather the storm (to be discussed in Part

The article covers the “how to” of survival and is a must read for any salon owner or beauty industry professional
