Hair that makes you look younger!

June 29th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in Beauty, Hair Gossip, Hair Tips & Tricks

shinyhairWhat woman doesn’t want to look younger? I haven’t met one yet. And the good news is there are lots of ways to do so, just by using your hair. Here are just a few for you to try:

Short Hair: Hair that is between chin and shoulder length is youthful. The length is flattering on most everyone. And it provides lots of options for styling, with out being high maintenance.

Bangs: Go for side swept bangs. They hide lines and wrinkles on the forehead. Plus, its a magic trick! Side swept bangs take a few pounds off the face.

Shiny: Keep your hair shiny by keeping it in good condition, using conditioner, or a shine serum works wonders for adding a glistening glow to your locks. Shiny hair is healthy hair and healthy hair is youthful.

Layers: When one imagines a youthful girl they usually see her with bouncy hair. To achieve this bouncy look, go for soft layers.Plus, hair that moves is a distraction from other imperfections.

Highlights: Pick colored highlights that accent your hair. and make people focus on it, rather then things you don’t want them to focus on.

The key is to find hair styles that accentuate your best features and hide your flaws. And dont over do it. Trying to look too young often works in the opposite dicrection. Leaving he woman looking older then she really is. For more information go to: http://www.bestsyndication.com/?q=node/31592

The New Finger Trend

June 4th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in Beauty, Beauty Business, Beauty News, Style

We have a new beauty treatment on our hands. Literally. It’s called Minx Nails. Rather than using liquid polish to color your nails, Minx nails uses solid nail coating type stickers. They are heated and then applied to your nail, and last roughly 4 weeks. And the main appeal for this over liquid polish… no chipping! The process is quite simple really:

1. Pick your color

2. Place Minx under heat lamp to make flexible.

3. Re size to fit your nail shape.

4. Use heat lamp to shrink-wrap the Minx covering

5. File to remove excess film.

6. Enjoy!

Amazing Hair Story

May 21st, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in Beauty, Hair News, Salon News

Three young girls, two kindergartners and a 4th grader, donated their hair to Locks of Love. This was the 4th graders 3rd time donating. As this is the 3rd year their school has held a drive for Locks of Love.

If you want to donate to a good cause too, and happen to live in the Atlanta , Ga area, the third annual “It’s Just Hair” cut-a-thon will take place on Monday, May 18 from 2 to 8 p.m. at Taylor Brooks Salon, which is located at 11550 Jones Bridge Road in Alpharetta.

The cut-a-thon was started by a young girl named Jenna Cooley and her mom Diane, when they decided to do something to help other young girls like Jenna, whom was diagnosed with Alopecia Areata, an incurable auto-immune disease that causes hair loss.

Some big hair art

April 29th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in Beauty, Beauty News, Hair & Beauty Shows, Hair News, award show fashion

The International Fantasy Hair Competition, held in Manchester, NH, is about turning hair into art. But as it turns out, this isn’t just a beauty show but a good cause too. All proceeds for the night went to the New Hampshire Food Bank.

Stylists compete to make what look like the most absurd hair hats they can dream up. And the prizes range from $1000 to $7500. But the real work is done perhaps by the models, whom say the main ingredient for them is “Pain. Lots and lots of pain,”. And i guess its understandable. Melody Longobardi, 26, was forced by the 3-foot cherry tree on her head to stand at a 45-degree angle.

Grand prize winner was stylist Kevin Carter for his “Proud Peacock,” which involved actual feathers to look like the bird itself. And the model of his winning creation was Amaris Brown.

I’m not a believer

These days it seems that every celebrity has come out with a product or two. But Jessica Simpson, shes got a whole list. With everything from clothes to handbags to fragrances and now hair extensions. Offering fans the possibility of obtaining her famous cascade of champagne colored curls.

However it has been said that Jessica’s line of hair is made of Kanekalon Vibralite® mod acrylic fiber, and to those whom do not own their own line of extensions, that is the phony, plastic looking, synthetic hair.

Now, I hate to be the one to state the obvious, but I will anyways. I have never seen Jessica sporting hair that looks anything but expensive and polished down to every curl. In fact it has been said that she often spends up to $2500 dollars on her own head of hair. So it becomes hard for me to believe that she herself would ever wear her own line. And well, if the creator isn’t a believer, then its hard for me to be as well.

Going Green with Extensions

“Recycle, reduce, reuse” … a phrase that’s become all too common during these tough economic times. It seems it has become second nature for everyone, from the stars down to all us average Joe’s, to do everything possible to stretch every dollar. And every type of company is advertising its own ways to be more green. From grocery store reusable bags, to hybrid cars, and nature safe cleaning products.

But does a recession mean our beautiful hair has to be sacrificed as well? No, according to Raquel Watter, co-owner of RikRak salon on Brickell Avenue in Miami. Raquel has invented something she calls the ”Recession Extension,” a process in which the old extensions are basically recycled — that is, removed from the head, washed, blown dry and retaped to the real hair shaft.

This new procedure is $150. Down from a pricey $600-$1000 for new extensions.

Other salons have started teaching their clients how to keep their hair healthy in between salon visits. Senior designer Linda Sherwood, of the James Bentley Salon on West 57th Street, shares recipes of home remedies with her clients, to condition their hair using items they can find in their own kitchen. For example: mashing one avocado with a half cup of milk. Apply to hair and let sit for 30 minutes. The avocado adds moisture while the milk adds shine.

I think the lesson here is that even during a recession there is no reason to make your hair take the brut of it. To learn more ways that salons are helping customers remain feeling glamorous during a not so glamorous time visit these sites:

Hair Extensions in the White House?

November 19th, 2008 | Comments Off | Posted in Beauty, Fashion, Hair Extensions, Style, White House

Only Michelle Obama’s hair stylist knows this for sure, but we’re of the opinion that the stunning “to be” first lady has a full head of natural hair with no extensions to be found. Tragedy? Hardly. We’re also of the opinion that the future First Lady will do more in the next four years for lady’s fashion than all the first lady’s combined since Jacqueline Kennedy.

One stylist, Yusef Williams of Manhattan’s Paul Labrecque salon, thinks that “Michelle has a lot of full-length hair — no extensions.” Offering his opinion to the checkout stand mag OK!, Williams, who has the honor of being assigned as “a member of Michelle’s hair and makeup team,” predicts that she will change her hairstyle because “that’s the motto: change. Something shorter, layered, fun and one-of-a-kind.”

There you have it - No Extensions in the white house (yet). Maybe we’ll send some samples over to Williams and he can give us a trial run for the inagural? )

…pSst… I know (2) huge secrets…

Miley Cyrus is Hannah Montana!
AND… this teen star fancies extended hair!
Photobucket Photobucket
If you have kids or are a teen yourself, my secrets are old news. However… days ago this revelation came to me as a twenty-something-year-old lacking Nickelodeon/ the Disney Channel.  Yup a light-bulb went on and finally I sleep at night.

Recently the fifteen year old millionaire, Miley Cyrus, hosted the 2008 Teen Choice Awards on August 4th. The maybe-pre-permit-driver’s-licensed teen was photographed by paparazzi leaving Juan Juan Salon with a longer look July 27th, 2008.  Woohoo! … for Juan Juan Salon! … and Yeah! … for stylists with clientele who actually put on “Sweet Sixteen’s” for their spoiled children.  What about the average parents who want their offspring to understand the ethics/value of hard work and money?  This conversation will only end in door slammings and silent treatments across the country.  To them I am so sorry, teen-parent relationships are tricky enough.

So what is too young?  Currently there are no age laws or limits for customers sitting chair side.  Personally, I’d rather have the $1,500 nesting in a college fund than being flipped over a high school freshman’s shoulder (or get some real hair clip ins for a special event like Prom or Homecoming…duh).  Again on the optimistic side for cosmetologists everywhere; clients are showing up younger and younger.  I mean really… you can’t say no to a stage mom or the mother who wants to be a child’s BFF.  For parents out there needing backup to their “no way” argument; if the hamster’s still alive in 3 years of course you can care for your own hair extensions.  This is something for salons and hair suppliers to prepare for and look forward to.
